London Jewelry Designer Theodora Warre Specializes In Magical, Modern Keepsakes

Apr 05, 2024

Theodora Warre established her eponymous label in 2014, but jewelry design has always been within her makeup, being the great-granddaughter of the former crown jeweler, Harry Garrard.

Based in London (she has a studio in West London), she regularly visits Jaipur, and it's evident that India is a great source of inspiration to this designer. After all, she worked at the Gem Palace there and took a gemmology course to learn the trade.

And so, Warre uses her magic to turn colorful precious and semi-precious stones into modern keepsakes. Think gold that’s stylishly combined with diamonds, rubies, pink sapphires, emeralds and amethysts. Well, sign us up.

Cornerstones of craftsmanship, vibrancy and then, of course, there's a touch of the bohème which are at the heart of the brand. And it is this that attracts the buyers, the fashion crowd and the girls about town including the likes of Kate Moss, Adwoa Aboah, and Jean Campbell. Felicity Carter: What is your first memory of jewelry?

Theodora Warre: Desperately wanting my ears pierced at a young age, the earring love affair started early and is still ongoing!

Amethyst Heart Star Pendant

FC: How, when, why did you get into the industry?

TW: After leaving London college of fashion I went to Jaipur in India where I worked at the Gem Palace and took a gemmology course, it was during this time I designed and made my first pieces of jewelry.

Zircon Hopp Earrings

FC: How would you sum up the aesthetic of your brand?

TW: Free spirited, eclectic and natural. My new collection ‘Shape Shifter’ is a celebration of colour and form, specifically the way in stones take on another look completely when cut and set in different shapes.

Quartz Crystal Bow Necklace

FC: Who were the first stockists to pick up the label?

TW: Matchesfashion.com and Debbonaire, a by appointment only showroom in South Kensington owned by my friend Debbie von Bismarck. She bought my first collection and has stocked my jewelry ever since.

Baguette Earrings

FC: What is luxury to you?

TW: Something that not everyone else has, that is made well and to last. Luxury should be something that you keep forever even if it is a memory of a place.

Mother of Pearl & Diamond Star Ring

FC: Who is your customer?

TW: I don’t think I have a specific customer. I would like to think there is something for all different tastes and styles, however, a common denominator would be someone who appreciates the beauty of crystals and colour.

Green Amethyst & Emerald Square Drop Earrings

FC: Which was the first-ever piece that you designed and how did it come about?

TW: My first ever design was a knuckle to the finger joint wide band ring, I had to make a significant quantity as it was the first time I was working with that workshop so I made 50 in many different semi precious stones, gold plated and some in silver. Thankfully, they were a success and the beginning of what was to come.

Positivity Pendant

FC: Tell us about the process from sketch to production...

TW: I gather ideas, take pictures and do quick sketches to jog my memory when I am on my travels and or out and about, I then finalise my designs and create a collection in my West London studio. These are then sent to my workshop where they digitalise the sketches in CAD programme. The wax moulds are 3D printed which are then cast in silver, stones set and finally gold plated.

Often it takes multiple samples to get the design perfected, persevere until you are entirely happy.
